For those of you who are following our farm relocation progress, you will already know and understand the massive job we have in relocating our home and operation to the opposite side of Melbourne, in Clyde. For those who didn't know, we are having to move due to the urban growth zone claiming the land, with landlords selling for millions of dollars to developers whop plan to build more houses on it. We where leasing and farming for the past 4.5 years. It was a struggle to find new land to relocate to, due to Melbourne's shortage of urban farms with water for lease. It's a major issue that people don't realise is happening. Melbourne is rapidly losing all its urban farm lands to developers wealthy offers of money to then build houses to sell to our growing population. We are losing all the fertile soils, with water near by or underneath. This will in effect force the prices up on food and increase transportation costs for everyone. Our prediction is that most growers will be bought out in the coming 2-5 years. After that what will Melbournian's eat? food from interstate or china?
After 12 months of tireless searching and exploring 22 property and having meetings we can gladly say that we signed a lease in the food bowl of Melbourne, in Clyde. We started moving 6 weeks ago to our new location. Everything is all about starting again, breaking soil, installing irrigation systems, greenhouses, forming beds to grow on, enhancing soil biology and fertility, and planting seeds and seedlings. However 6 weeks is only the beginning, we still need to build our nursery, greenhouses, washing areas, packing areas, fix sheds and many more things, so we are closing for this week to try catch up. Hopefully you can see us still at our markets on both weekends and order for the following week. Any questions call David.
